From Startups to Generative AI: How to Build a Thriving Community for Innovation and Career Growth

Editor's Note: From a spark of curiosity to building Singapore’s go-to generative AI community, Shivang’s journey with The Generative Beings (TGB) has been one of transformation and connection. What began as intimate gatherings has evolved into a dynamic community, partnering with industry leaders like Microsoft, AWS, Google and NVIDIA to drive the future of AI innovation. This isn’t just a story about AI—it’s about bold pivots, unlocking potential, and creating spaces where ideas flourish. Dive in to discover how curiosity can fuel change and how you, too, can build something extraordinary.

From Curiosity to Community Builder: My Journey in Generative AI

Curiosity is the spark that ignites transformation. My journey into generative AI didn’t start with a technical background—it started with a simple question: What’s next?

I came from the fast-paced world of early-stage startups, where I honed my skills in product development, problem-solving, and go-to-market strategies. But when I encountered generative AI, I knew it was something transformative. My initial goal was to learn about the space and understand its market potential. Yet, as I began networking with like-minded individuals, I discovered a shared desire: a need for a dedicated space to explore, build, and grow in the generative AI ecosystem in Singapore.

That’s how The Generative Beings (TGB) came to life. What started as a casual mixer for product managers and AI professionals has flourished into a dynamic community, securing partnerships with global tech leaders like Google, Microsoft, AWS, and NVIDIA.

Building TGB: A Purpose-Driven Mission

At TGB, I’ve always focused on one thing: solving real problems. Generative AI is powerful, but it’s only as valuable as the user problems it addresses. That’s why we emphasize practical, scalable applications of AI rather than technology for its own sake.

AI should address genuine user pain points rather than exist for its own sake. This means prioritizing problem-solving over technical deep-dives. Through events and partnerships, TGB emphasizes the “why” behind AI solutions, helping members and partners identify real, scalable applications of generative AI. This approach aligns TGB’s events with industry needs, ensuring relevance for members, partners, and industry stakeholders globally.

Generative AI is as transformative today as the internet once was. It’s shaping the future of productivity, learning, and innovation. Our journey from small events to a full-fledged community platform has been inspiring. Together with my co-founder Soumitra and our dedicated community channel leads, Rishabh , Abhilash and Mei Yu, we’ve transformed TGB from its modest origins as a WhatsApp group into specialized channels and, ultimately, a robust web application. Today, TGB connects technical and non-technical talent, fosters collaboration, and provides a launchpad for anyone looking to innovate in this space.

Pivoting Careers: Lessons in Adaptation and Networking

Career transitions aren’t easy, but they are incredibly rewarding. My own shift into generative AI taught me the importance of continuous learning, seeking mentorship, embracing curiosity, and—most importantly—building a personal brand.

Ups and downs are inevitable, but focusing on what you can make happen keeps you relevant and top-of-mind among peers. In today’s world, career growth is about more than resumes and job portals. It’s about being seen, heard, and trusted for the value you bring.

Formal learning, coupled with community-based exploration, builds knowledge and broadens your network. TGB embodies this philosophy, offering members a platform to learn from one another, share resources, and collaborate on AI projects.

Networking isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. By creating TGB, I’ve helped others build credibility and form meaningful connections that propel their careers forward.

What’s Next for TGB: Empowering the Future of AI

With over 1,500 members, TGB is just getting started. My vision is to make it Southeast Asia’s premier destination for learning, skill-building, and revenue-generating opportunities in generative AI.

We’re launching exciting initiatives like hackathons, masterclasses, and regional conferences. These efforts aim to equip our members with the tools, skills, and networks they need to thrive in this rapidly evolving field.

My Takeaway for You

Generative AI isn’t just about technology—it’s about possibility. Whether you’re technical or non-technical, what matters most is your willingness to learn, adapt, and collaborate. This technology levels the playing field, empowering people to bring their ideas to life faster and more effectively than ever before. How we use it for upskilling ourselves will define how far we can reach, how quickly we can get there, and what do we do once we are there.

So, ask yourself: What’s next for me? If you’re curious, ready to grow, and eager to connect with a community of builders, explore ground-up communities like TGB—or start your own.
