Global Career Reflections: Insights for Professionals on the Move

Editor's Note: Embark on a captivating journey through the highs and lows of a seasoned HR professional, Ria Putri Santosa, who navigate the intricate landscape of global career transitions. From the bustling streets of Indonesia to the vibrant work culture of Singapore and now thriving in Bangkok, this article unravels the personal reflections, resilience, and triumphs of an individual who embraced challenges with an open heart.

Navigating the HR Landscape: From Indonesia to Singapore

When the offer came from Meta Singapore, I felt both happy and cautious. Despite enjoying two years as an HRBP and facing challenges in that role, I aspired to work on a global scale. However, my experience as an HR Generalist, advising senior leadership, lacked international law and regulation knowledge. Joining Meta as a Technical Sourcer became my first step toward that goal.

Another concern was the relocation and visa approval process. Anxiously researching cases of Employment Pass (EP) delays, I soon realised it was unnecessary worry. Trusting Meta's global mobility team, submitting required documents, and understanding the thorough offer process eased my concerns. I am grateful for Meta's support during relocation, which significantly facilitated the process and eliminated unnecessary stress.

Moving to Singapore was smooth with Meta's support, but doubts arose upon starting work. As a newcomer to an international company, questions about my worth and overcoming imposter syndrome kept me awake. Maintaining an open mind and a commitment to self-improvement, along with inspiration from my colleagues, helped me navigate these challenges.

Coping with Layoffs: A Tale of Resilience

Layoffs are never easy, especially after uprooting one's life in another country. Facing emotional, financial, and physical challenges, I wondered where to start rebuilding amidst uncertainties. The support I received from acquaintances, previous candidates, and even strangers was overwhelming. Acts of kindness, such as a stranger offering free LinkedIn Premium, fueled my hope during that challenging time.

Stories of kindness continued as people I had hired went out of their way to find roles for me in their networks. These gestures restored my faith and hope during the challenging period of rebuilding.

Thriving in a New Country: The Agoda Chapter

Before Agoda, I took any opportunity for stability but soon realized it wasn't the right fit. When Agoda's offer came, I hesitated due to fear and uncertainties. However, a former manager encouraged me to reflect on my career goals. Recognizing my desire for global exposure and a diverse environment, I embraced the opportunity at Agoda.

Thailand and its people have been wonderful, contributing to my healing and progress. The lesson learned since my layoff is that some things are beyond control. However, taking charge of what I can control, such as impacting my current company's mission, has been empowering.

Career Reflections: Lessons for Aspiring HR Professionals

For those seeking clarity in their career journey, my advice is not to stress. Seek what you love and be comfortable with seeking discomfort when it aligns with your goals. The path to professional identity is seldom straightforward, with many turns and stops. Remember the kindness of others, and most importantly, be kind to yourself.
